Ludmila Belousova was born on November 22, 1935 in Ulyanovsk, Russian SFSR. Oleg Protopopov was born on June 16, 1932 in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia. They won two gold medals in pairs at the Olympic Winter Games in 1964, in Innsbruck, Austria, and 1968, in Grenoble, and four World Championships in 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968. Even though Belousova kept her maiden name when she married her partner, Oleg Protopopov, the pair are commonly referred to as "The Protopopovs".
