Glynis Johns
(Glynis Johns singing 'Send in the Clowns' with Len Cariou)
Glynis Johns was born on October 5,1923) in Pretoria, South Africa. She is a British stage and film actress, dancer, pianist and singer (notably of "Send in the Clowns" in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music). The song "Send in the Clowns" was written with her in mind, and in 1973, she won a Tony award for her role in the musical. Glynis' other best-known Hollywood assignments include the roles of Maid Jean in Danny Kaye's The Court Jester (1956) and the suffragette Mrs. Banks in Disney's Mary Poppins (1964) (Johns was the only cast member to have the foresight to demand a portion of the royalties for the Poppins soundtrack record).
