| Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was born on June 30, 1917 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York. In 1943, Lena Horne signed a long-term contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the most prestigious studio in the world at that time thus becoming the first African American performer to do so.
